Jordan participates in conference on Nuclear Power Free World

Amman, Feb.1 (Petra) -- Jordan participated in Global Conference for a Nuclear Power Free World 2012 held in Yokohama, Japan.

The conference came in the wake of the powerful explosion that hit a nuclear reactor in the city of Fukushima on March 11, 2011, which was considered the most dangerous after the Chernobyl accident in 1986.

The two-day conference brought together around 11,500 experts from 30 countries, as well as 30,000 people who watched online. The meeting aimed to create safe societies with justice and to cry out "no!" to both nuclear weapons and to nuclear power, which had been promoted as "clean energy".

Jordan was represented to the conference by Advisory Board member for the Initiative of a Middle East Free of Nuclear Weapons, Mona Makhamra, member of parliament and President of the Energy and Mineral Resources Committee Jamal Gammoh and parliament member and chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Health and Environment Motasem al-Awamleh.

Speaking at the opening session, Awamleh stressed that human life is more precious ha the cheap nuclear energy.

Makhamra and chairman of the Energy Committee in the House of Representatives Jamal Gammoh talked about the dangers of setting up nuclear power plants in Jordan, pointing to the negative impacts of the project on a country located in the Middle East, which is the center of conflicts in the world.

They stressed the importance of directing the Jordanian government investments towards oil shale, wind and solar energy.

The conference adopted the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone "Declaration 311" to be launched in March.

On the sidelines of the conference, the Jordanian delegation visited the quake-hit city of Fukushima to witness the reality life and environment in the aftermath of the tsunami.
