ESCWA condemns Israeli crimes against Palestinians

Beirut, May 17 (Petra) -- United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, ESCWA, Thursday condemned in a statement the death of 61 Palestinians, including 6 children at the hands of Israeli forces in a peaceful demonstration on April 14, 2018.

"Using disproportionate force, especially using live ammunition against peaceful demonstrators, is an Israeli ongoing violation to the international law and a disregard to the dignities and lives of citizens. This is but a sequel of the ongoing documented Israeli violations of the international law, including the blockade on Gaza for 11 years. Israel has also repeatedly violated the Fourth-Geneva convention, especially with regard to protecting civilians." the statement said.

UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, expressed his "concern regarding the escalation in violence in the occupied Palestinian territories and the rising death toll among Palestinians that were killed or maimed in Gaza." He also called for a "transparent and independent investigation" to the incident." "Living conditions in Gaza under the 51-year long Israeli occupation are unbearable. Israel can't continue with this after 70 years of dispersing and suppressing the Palestinian people without being accountable to its crimes. Palestinians, especially Gazans, have endured a lot and the international community must act to end their suffering and put the Israelis accountable, ESCWA added.
