EU Ambassador delivers lecture at JPA in Amman

Amman, Oct.11 (Petra) -- Ambassador and Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Jordan, Andrea Matteo Fontana, said the bloc is committed to maintaining unchanged, the levels of support to Jordan with regard to the Syrian refugee crisis.

In a lecture delivered at the Jordan Press Association (JPA) Wednesday evening, the EU ambassador said the total value of the current aid package to Jordan amounted to 473 million euros, distributed on education, energy, jobs and the private sector.

He noted that relations between Jordan and the EU are developing in all fields, calling for increasing support provided to the Kingdom to help it face the Syrian refugees crisis.

Fontana spoke about partnership priorities agreed upon between the EU and Jordan in 2016, which included strengthening cooperation on security, stability and combating terrorism in the region, as well as supporting social and economic development in Jordan in harmony with the 2025 vision, supporting efforts to promote governance, rule of law, democratic reforms and human rights.

He told the meeting that press freedom plays a role in promoting good governance and democracy, adding that the EU's most important priority is to support the freedom of expression, the press and the media, as they constitute a pillar for political, economic, social and cultural development.
