Amman, April 2 (Petra) -- The Ministry of Environment on Thursday launched the Kingdom’s third State of the Environment Report, with support from the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Environment Program.

During the launch, which brought together representatives of government entities, national teams, and environmental experts, Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman said the report documents the rapid environmental transformations witnessed in the Kingdom in recent years, driven by mounting pressures from population growth, urban expansion, regional developments, and the escalating impacts of climate change.

He highlighted key environmental challenges, including water scarcity, air quality, waste management, biodiversity conservation, and the sustainability of natural resources.

The minister explained that the report adopts an integrated scientific methodology based on comprehensive environmental assessment frameworks, enabling analysis of the interlinkages between driving forces, environmental pressures, current conditions, impacts, and response measures. This approach, he said, supports a holistic understanding of environmental issues and informs priority-setting for future interventions.

He added that the report serves as a key national reference and an analytical tool to support evidence-based decision-making, providing a reliable knowledge base for government institutions, the private sector, and civil society, while contributing to the advancement of environmental policies and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

Suleiman noted that the launch marks a milestone in advancing national environmental assessment efforts and lays the groundwork for the preparation of the fourth report, with a focus on enhancing data quality and aligning priorities with emerging environmental challenges.

For her part, the Resident Representative of the UNDP in Jordan, Randa Abu Hassan, said the UNDP remains committed to supporting the environmental sector through projects and initiatives aligned with the Kingdom’s Economic Modernization Vision (2023–2033), particularly under the "Sustainable Environment" pillar.

She added that the report represents a successful model of knowledge-based institutional collaboration, aimed at developing more effective policies to address environmental challenges and advance sustainable development in Jordan.

Deputy Regional Director of the UNEP’s West Asia Office, Abdul Majeid Haddad, said the preparation of State of the Environment reports reflects a collective institutional effort, involving broad participation from national entities. He noted that the report, officially launched in 2024, included specialized training on integrated environmental assessment methodologies, enabling national teams to develop their chapters in line with best scientific practices.
